What is Zumba?
Zumba is a cardio-fitness dance class to Latin music that is so fun, it feels like a party. That's why the slogan is "Ditch the workout. Join the Party." The music is energetic and the latin rhythms move your body. You find yourself enveloped by the music and company of others as you learn simple new moves that keep you interested, develop tone in your body and cardio fitness for your heart.
Some classes have DJ Michael Artnz. See details on each classes for those that Michael is the DJ for.
About the Music
Photography by Kendall Ross Bean
Each Zumba instructor choreographs for their own classes and chooses their own music. But all classes include specific Zumba music and steps that everyone who does Zumba uses around the world. Karen uses Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Reggaeton, Samba, Bachata music. Karen also includes up to four other types of music and moves that are based upon Argentine Tango, East and West Coast Swing, Hustle and Bhangra.
No Dance Experience Required. All Fitness Levels Welcome.
No matter what your skill and fitness level, you can join one of Karen's Zumba classes and feel comfortable. Karen adjusts the class to its participants. For those who have been doing Zumba for a long time, she leads energetic and interesting routines. Karen shows beginners how to simplify their moves to match their skill and fitness level, students to build stamina, physical strength, cardio fitness, style and flair suited to their own personality as they continue doing Zumba over time.
What Should I Wear?
Photography by Kendall Ross Bean
Wear loose fitting comfortable clothes that you can work out in and sweat in. You will probably need a change of clothes if you are going somewhere else immediately after your Zumba class. We recommend that you wear low heel or flat shoes that can swivel in circlular motion on the floor. Tennis shoes made for walking don't usually swivel or move from side to side, so they may put stress on your feet and knees.
Karen likes the Zumba tennis shoe. It is light and flexible and two specially-designed pivot points that allow you to slide and grip when the moment calls for it. This breathable shoe will also keep you quick on your feet with maximum support, a molded footbed, and a rubber heel support. Karen uses her own arch supports inside the shoes. What is the history of Zumba?
Celebrity fitness trainer, "Beto" Perez, stumbled upon the concept of Latin-inspired dance-fitness in his native Cali, Colombia in the mid-Ô90s.
One day, he walked into his aerobics class and realized he had forgotten his aerobics music. Thinking quickly, he grabbed whatever tapes he had in his backpack. Beto's tapes were comprised of songs he loved, the traditional Latin salsa and merengue music he listened to all his life. But it was a challenge to improvise a whole class on the spot using non-traditional aerobics music. Beto rose to the challenge and from this last-minute improvisation a revolutionary new concept in fitness was born Ð the Zumba Fitness-Partyª! The class soon became the most popular class at his fitness facility.
